Therapist versus Coach
A question I am commonly asked is, “What is the difference between a therapist and a coach?” My journey began 11 year ago as a traditionally trained therapist. I noticed that people came in every week with what looked like a new issue or problem but was really the same issue disguised as new – one week they had trouble with their spouse, the next trouble with their boss and the next problems with self-esteem. I quickly saw that true healing was not taking place. As someone how believed that you can only take your clients as far as you are willing to go yourself, I went on a journey of self discovery and self healing. I found that what was missing was a relationship with the soul and with spirituality. By spirituality, I don’t mean religion and I don’t have a doctrine to preach. I mean that everyone has a right and has their own experience of their spirituality, what that means to them, whether that is through creating art, practicing yoga or through a religious organization. I belief that true healing takes place inside of relationship and with the mind, body and soul connection. In taking the time to explore these aspects, true healing can take place. To me, this is more intimate that a traditional therapist/client relationship. It is also some of the most profound relationships I have created yet.
